Stranded in the Czech Republic because of the COVID-19 pandemic with no medical insurance?
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, some people have been forced to stay in the Czech Republic without medical insurance.
This is mainly the case with Czech citizens who reside abroad permanently or on a long-term basis and who came to the Czech Republic for a temporary stay as well as foreign nationals who have to stay in the country longer than originally planned.
Czech nationals living in another EU Member State or citizens of other EU countries can take advantage of healthcare provided under the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). However, relying exclusively on the EHIC can be risky because the scheme only covers emergency care and essential treatments.
Pojišťovna VZP, a.s. (PVZP) offers commercial medical insurance that provides coverage similar to the public medical insurance scheme.
Three options are available:
- Basic Medical Insurance for Foreigners provides coverage to foreign nationals whose stay in the Czech Republic does not exceed 90 days.
- Comprehensive Medical Insurance for Foreigners PLUS is intended for people who plan to stay in the Czech Republic for three months or longer.
- Comprehensive Medical Insurance for Foreigners EXCLUSIVE is recommended for individuals who plan to stay in the Czech Republic for one year and longer.
